FAQs
GENERAL
How do I get started?
Start by scheduling a free assessment. We’ll talk through your dog’s needs, answer your questions, and help you decide the best next step.
TRAINING
What training methods do you use?
All training is science-based, humane, and rooted in positive reinforcement. We focus on teaching skills, building confidence, and strengthening communication — never intimidation or punishment.
Do you offer both private and group training?
Yes. We offer:
Private training for one-on-one, customized support
Group skill-building classes for dogs who benefit from learning around others
Puppy training, behavior modification, and Board & Train Fundamentals programs
We’ll help you choose the right option during your assessment.
What’s the difference between private training and group classes?
Private training is tailored entirely to your dog and your goals, and is ideal for targeted skill work or behavior challenges.
Group classes focus on foundational skills, confidence, and focus around distractions — and are a great fit for dogs who enjoy learning alongside others.
How do I know which class level is right for my dog?
Sara will guide you to the appropriate level based on your dog’s age, experience, and comfort level. Class descriptions can be found here.
Do my dog and I need to practice between classes?
Yes — and it doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Five to ten minutes a day is enough. Group classes are as much about teaching you how to teach your dog as they are about the dog’s learning skills.
Can two people accompany one dog to classes?
Yes. Multiple handlers may attend, but only one handler will be asked to work with each dog at a time. You’re welcome to switch handlers during class.
We’re expecting! Can you help us introduce our dog to our newborn?
Yes — and we love this work. We’ve helped many families through this transition and have personal experience with it as well. It’s never too early to start. As soon as you get the good news, reach out. There’s a lot we can do before the baby arrives to set everyone up for a smooth, calm, and safe introduction.
BOARDING
What is your boarding environment like?
Our boarding is intentionally home-style, not kennel-style. Dogs enjoy fenced-in acres of outdoor space, cozy indoor sleeping areas, and round-the-clock human supervision. We keep groups small so every dog is known, monitored, and cared for as an individual.
How many separate play spaces do you have?
We have four separate fenced-in play yards across more than eight acres, plus an additional four acres of trails used for leashed walks, sniff work, and enrichment sessions.
Are dogs ever left alone?
No. There is always a staff member on site, and dogs are never left alone unless it’s part of a thoughtfully designed behavior modification plan.
How do you decide which dogs board together?
Before any first stay, Sara personally assesses every dog for temperament, sociability, and needs. Dogs are thoughtfully grouped based on play style, energy level, and compatibility — not size alone.
What if dogs don’t get along with each other?
This is exactly why Dog Life is designed the way it is. We prioritize well-being over volume. Every dog is assessed honestly and grouped carefully. If challenges arise, we increase decompression time, separate dogs as needed, and adjust routines. With multiple play yards and indoor spaces, we have plenty of flexibility to support dogs safely and calmly.
If I don’t live in the Hudson Valley, how do you assess my dog?
Whenever possible, we prefer to meet dogs in person and will travel to do so. When that’s not feasible, we conduct a virtual assessment and ask for short videos of your dog in everyday situations we can’t replicate on a call.
What should I send with my dog for boarding?
Please send your dog’s regular food to keep routines consistent and tummies happy. We provide bedding, bowls, and everything else they need to feel at home.
You’ll also send:
Measuring spoons or cups (if needed)
Any enrichment toys or fillings your dog uses regularly
Leash and collar or harness
Jacket or coat in colder months
Medications and supplements & their schedule
Toothbrush and toothpaste, if dental care is part of their daily routine
A list of your specific training cues so we are all speaking the same language.
Please do not send crates, bowls, or beds unless we’ve specifically asked you to.
Do you offer transportation?
Yes. Pick-up and drop-off for overnight boarding is available between the Hudson Valley, New York City, Connecticut, and New Jersey, with a few exceptions. Details and costs are discussed during your assessment, but the price typically ranges from $150 - $230.
A few things to note:
Whenever possible, we’ll combine trips and split the cost evenly among dogs in the same area.
Because, unlike other services, we accommodate individual schedules, shared transport can’t be guaranteed — but we always try.
If you have two or more dogs, you’ll only pay one transportation fee.
Can I choose the day and time for pick-up and drop-off?
Yes! It is another thing that makes us special We do offer “concierge” pick-up and drop-off for boarding for an additional charge, and we’ll always make every reasonable effort to accommodate specific requests. When possible, we group pick-ups and drop-offs for efficiency, cost-savings to you, (and to reduce environmental impact). When we’re able to do that, we divide the cost evenly among participating families and pass the savings along.
What if I forget something?
It happens. If something is missing, we’ll contact you right away. When possible, we’ll ask you to overnight a replacement or purchase a local equivalent. We also always have enrichment options on hand as a backup if you forget to send their normal chew.
My dog takes multiple medications/vitamins on a schedule. Can you handle that?
Absolutely. We regularly care for dogs — including seniors — with chronic medical needs. Following strict medication schedules is no problem for our team.
My dog sleeps in bed with me. What happens at night?
No dog ever sleeps alone here. Our sleeping area is an open floor plan with plenty of cozy options, including spaces to curl up near (or with) a human. After full days of play, learning, and fresh air, everyone tends to sleep very well.
You don’t use kennels, but my dog sleeps in a crate. Can you accommodate that?
Yes. While we offer kennel-free boarding, we absolutely use crates when a dog is accustomed to sleeping in one or when it makes sense for their comfort and training.
My dog needs daily brushing to prevent matting. Can you do that?
Of course! Some coats require daily maintenance, and we’re happy to provide gentle daily brushing at no additional charge. The same goes for daily tooth brushing when requested. We also offer full grooming services for an extra charge.
DAYCARE & PLAYCARE
What’s the difference between daycare and playcare?
Daycare is a full-day experience that includes supervised play, rest periods, and structured care. Playcare is a one-hour supervised play session designed for socialization, confidence-building, or pure fun — with pick-up and drop-off available within a 10-mile radius.
Do dogs need to be assessed before joining daycare or playcare?
Yes. Every dog is assessed by Sara before joining either program to ensure safety, comfort, and the right social fit.
What if my dog gets overstimulated?
We watch closely and intervene early. Dogs are given breaks, quieter time, or space as needed. Our goal is balanced, happy dogs — not nonstop chaos.
COOPERATIVE CARE GROOMING
What is Cooperative grooming?
Cooperative grooming distinguishes Dog Life from most other grooming facilities. It means your dog is an active, willing participant in the grooming process — not restrained, rushed, or forced through it. We work at your dog’s pace, use gentle handling, positive reinforcement, and allow pauses or breaks when needed.
Why do you use a Cooperative Care approach?
Because how a dog feels during grooming matters. Cooperative Care reduces stress, builds trust, and helps dogs feel safer being handled. It’s especially beneficial for puppies, seniors, and dogs who have had difficult grooming experiences in the past.
What grooming services do you currently offer?
We currently offer gentle coat care (bath and blow dry), brushing, de-matting, nail trims, and basic hygiene services, like ear and teeth cleaning. All grooming is done using Cooperative Care principles.
Will my dog ever be forced to complete grooming?
No. We don’t force dogs through grooming procedures. If a dog needs to stop, we stop. Our goal is progress over time — always protecting your dog’s safety, trust, and emotional well-being.
Can Cooperative grooming help outside of grooming?
Yes. Cooperative Care often carries over into vet visits, medication handling, brushing at home, and other forms of daily care. Many clients notice their dogs becoming more comfortable with handling overall.
My dog needs daily brushing to prevent matting. Can you do that?
Of course! Some coats require daily maintenance, and we’re happy to provide gentle daily brushing at no additional charge. The same goes for daily tooth brushing when requested.
